Ever since Mai was a little girl, she spent most of her time alone. Her parents hardly ever had time to be with her, so she became extremely aloof and independent. Once she discovered Duel Monsters, she found comfort and strength in the powerful Harpie Ladies, which became her favorite cards. When she entered the Duelist Kingdom tournament, she thought nothing of using tricks to win duels. But after meeting Yugi and his friends, and seeing how happy they were together and how supportive they were of each other, she slowly began to open up more to friendship. She still retains her sassiness and tough-talking demeaner, but her kind side continues to shine as she spends more time with Yugi and company. She does have a discreet crush on Joey, which she shows by constantly teasing him, but also giving him words of encouragement when he needs it. He reciprocates her feelings, though neither one of them has yet admitted it.
