When Usopp was a child his father Yasopp left home in order to become a pirate and join Shanks' crew. Usopp's mother then became very ill, and every day Usopp would stare out at sea and wait, still believing that his father would return one day, perhaps with a secret herb he believed existed somewhere which could cure any illness. But his mother eventually passed away and his father still did not return. But Usopp continued to wait and every morning he would run through the village yelling "The pirates are coming!" hoping that his father really would return that day. He soon became infamous and shunned in the village for being a big fibber and liar. But even so, Usopp wanted to become a brave pirate and go on adventures like his father. He managed to gather a small crew of three boys from the village whom he dubbed the "Usopp Pirates." However Usopp never left the village; instead he would often visit and tell stories to Kaya, a rich but sickly and lonely girl who lived in a mansion in the village. Even though most of his stories were lies about exciting sea adventures that he never really had, Kaya loved them and Usopp enjoyed telling them to her. But Kaya's butler Kurohador despised Usopp and tried to prevent the two from spending time together.
Not long after Luffy and his crew arrived at Usopp's village, Kurohador's darkest secret was revealed; he was actually the much feared pirate Kuro, who was supposedly dead. He had feigned his own defeat and devised a plan to become Kaya's butler so that he would be the sole heir in her will...then he and his pirates would kill her! After finding this out, Usopp became enraged but when he tried to warn the villagers that Kurohador was really Kuro and his pirates were going to attack the village, they thought it was just another one of his lies. But Luffy and his crew came to the rescue and after an extremely long and difficult battle they were able to defeat Kuro and his pirates. Usopp then decided to join Luffy's crew and a grateful Kaya gave them a ship, the Go Merrie.
Usopp's still wants to follow his dream of becoming a brave pirate and "warrior of the sea" like his father. He also hopes that he'll meet his father sometime on his journey. Being the sharpshooter in Luffy's crew, he has great aim with all kinds of shooting weapons, like guns and cannons. His main weapon is a slingshot that he uses to shoot off many different kinds of pellets, like smoke, pepper, and even eggs. But probably Usopp's biggest fault is that he's a total coward...he usually prefers to let the rest of the crew to the fighting, but once the danger is past, he likes to brag about how brave he is. But even so he's not as rough and cynical as Zoro and Sanji and he's not as spacey as Luffy; other than being a fibber and a coward he's a pretty decent guy.
