Ever since he was little, Luffy has been inspired by "Red Haired" Shanks, the captain of a group of pirates that once visited his childhood town. Shanks' free-spirited way of life greatly influenced Luffy to become a pirate himself. However, Luffy's life changed forever when he accidentally found and ate the Gomu Gomu Fruit, which was a treasure that Shanks and his crew discovered. The Fruit turned Luffy's entire body to rubber, allowing him to stretch incredible lengths and repel most any kind of attack. But like the rest of the mysterious "Devil's" Fruits, it took away his ability to swim. That same day a gang of bandits came to town and, when they made fun of Shanks at the local bar, Luffy became enraged and tried to pick a fight with them. But the bandits got the upper hand and tossed Luffy into the ocean. Not being able to swim, Luffy was about to fall prey to a huge sea monster until Shanks rescued him…but the monster had managed to bite off Shanks' left arm! After that act of self-sacrifice, Luffy became more determined than ever to follow in Shanks' footsteps. Before his crew left the town, Shanks gave Luffy his prized straw hat and told him to return it once he became a great pirate. Ever since then, Luffy's been gathering a crew and sailing through the treacherous waterway known as the Grand Line in order to become "King of the Pirates" and to find the previous King, Gold Roger's, legendary treasure One Piece.
Despite his superhuman strength as a "rubber man" and the huge pirate bounty on his head, Luffy's real personality couldn't be more contrasting. He's carefree, fun-loving, easily impressed, always cheerfully seeking out adventure, and he eats like there's no tomorrow. Although his utterly oblivious and naive nature sometimes irritates the rest of his crew, his optimism, reliable intuition, and fierce dedication has helped pull them through the many dangerous adventures that they face. He'll do anything to protect his crew and to fulfill his dream of reaching the Grand Line and becoming "King of the Pirates." Despite being a total airhead most of the time, Luffy won't put up with injustice of any kind. Oppression and cruelty are about the only things that can get him angry(or if someone steals his food ^^,,,)
