Fushigi Yugi Story Synopsis

Miaka Yuuki and Yui Hongo are two best friends planning on going to high school together. But one day, while visiting Tokyo's national library, the girls discover a strange and ancient Chinese book called "The Universe of the Four Gods." After opening the book, they're mysteriously transported into its world, a world much like a magical ancient China. Pretty soon, Yui is transported back to the real world, although Miaka is still left stranded. But soon enough, she meets (and eventually falls in love with) the dashing and handsome Tamahome. However, the two of them are suddenly caught in the middle of a war going on between the city of Konan and its invading enemy Kutou. While Yui, Miaka's brother Keisuke, and his friend Tetsuya try to search for a way to bring Miaka back to their world, as well as find more information about the strange Chinese book, Miaka volunteers to become the "priestess of Suzaku" that the people of Konan had been waiting for. According to their legend, a priestess from another world will arrive to summon the great beast-god Suzaku that would save their city. Once Suzaku is summoned, he will grant any three wishes the priestess desires before she is sent back to her world. But before the summoning ceremony can take place, the priestess must find and gather the seven celestial warriors, who represent the seven star constellations that Suzaku rules over. It turns out that Tamahome, as well as the emperor of Konan, Hotohori, are two of the warriors(they're identified by a Chinese character mark that appears on a part of their body), and eventually the others are also found; the feisty crossdresser Nuriko, the elusive monk Chichiri, the hot-tempered bandit Tasuki, the gentle healer Mitsukake, and the child scholar Chiriko, all make up the seven warriors of Suzaku. Also, during their many difficult struggles to find all the warriors, Miaka and Tamahome continue to fall more and more in love, and Miaka decides that once Suzaku is summoned, she would wish that she and Tamahome could be together forever.

But tragedy soon strikes "The Universe of the Four Gods" when Yui returns to the world of the book to find Miaka. During her desperate search, she suffers kidnapping and rape, and even tries to commit suicide out of sheer anguish! But she's "rescued" by the mysterious Nakago, who happens to be a celestial warrior of the beast-god Seiryuu. Although Nakago pretends to care for Yui, he has a crafty and evil will deep inside, and he had been manipulating everything that happened to her from the start...all so she would become the priestess of Seiryuu for the city of Kutou, the sworn enemy of the city Miaka is trying to save! Not only that, but Yui finds that she's developed feelings for Tamahome as well, and she accuses Miaka of being so involved in her relationship with him, that she didn't even come to help her when she needed it the most. Eventually, Yui's hatred of Miaka and feelings of betrayal and jealousy grow so strong, that she agrees to become the priestess of Seiryuu and, after gathering all of the warriors of Seiryuu, she would use one of her wishes to make sure that Miaka and Tamahome could never be together! Fights between Suzaku and Seiryuu warriors eventually ensue and many are killed from both sides, making it even more difficult to summon the beast-gods. But will Miaka ever be able to summon Suzaku and win back the love of her former best friend? What are Nakago's true intentions? And most importantly, will Miaka and Tamahome ever be able to be together?
