Winry has been good friends with Ed and Al ever since they were young children. She lived very close to the brothers in their peaceful, countryside house and they would often play together(or Ed and Al would show her their amateaur alchemy skills.) Probably the most tragic event in Winry's life was when she found out that her parents, who were doctors, had been killed by State Alchemists during a war. But as she grew up, she slowly began to heal from this tragedy, and she and her aunt Pinako ran an auto-mail(mechanical body parts) shop. Winry became extremely skilled(and a tad bit obsessive) with all forms of auto-mail, and it was thanks to her skill that Ed was able to use an auto-mail arm and leg to replace the ones he lost(she also gave her dog Den an auto-mail leg.)
Even though Ed and Al lost their mother and later left their home in order to search for a way to turn their bodies back to normal, they know that Winry is one of the few people they can count on for support in times of need. Despite her love-hate relationship with Ed, it's obvious that Winry cares much for the brothers as well, but she often feels somewhat distanced from them ever since they left home and she gets the feeling that sometimes they keep their true feelings and intentions hidden from her. She knows that Ed and Al want to fix their past mistake on their own, without getting anyone else involved, but Winry still wants to help them as much as she can.
