Al and his older brother Ed are the two sons of the renowned alchemist Hoenheim Elric. Ever since they were little they were fascinated by alchemy and they were always working to improve their own alchemy skills. But the lives of the two young brothers took a drastic turn when their mother died of an illness and, when they tried to use a forbidden alchemic spell to revive her, something went terribly wrong and Ed ended up loosing his left leg and Al lost his entire body! But before Al's soul could be lost as well, Ed gave up his right arm in order to seal Al's soul inside a suit of armor that happened to be in the corner of the room. Wanting nothing more than to turn their bodies back to normal, Ed made the decision to join the State Alchemists in the hopes that it would eventually help him and Al achieve their goal.
Being the younger of the two brothers, Al is a bit more naive and unsure of himself than Ed. The fact that he no longer has a human body that can feel things doesn't help to lift his spirits or confidence at all(it is a bit strange hearing the voice of a young child coming from a bulky, man-sized suit of armor), and he sometimes gets the demoralizing idea that he was never a real person to begin with and that his memories may have all been created by Ed. But even so, he can't deny the bond that he and Ed share and in spite of his tragedy, he's gentle, caring, nonjudgmental, and doesn't seem to have a speck of hatred or bitterness in his heart. And although he sometimes feels uncertain about his identity, he's dedicated to Ed and is always there to offer him words of encouragement(or to calm him down when he gets angry.)
