Evangelion is definitely one of the most action-packed, intense, suspenseful, and psychologically-stimulating animes of all! However, it can get quite complicated sometimes, especially when it comes to knowing all of the key names and terms. So I've composed this dictionary that lists and describes all the important Evangelion words that I've taken from the MAGI Archives on Manga's Evangelion: Death and Rebirth DVD.
Absolute Terror Field (A.T Field): A defensive physical barrier projected by both Angels and Evas. Conventional weapons cannot penetrate the A.T Field. The Evas ability to penetrate these fields makes them indispensible for fending off Angel attacks. According to Kaworu, all humans also posses an A.T Field that allows their soul to maintain their physical form.
Adam: The "Giant of Light" seen during Second Impact, Adam was the 1st Angel, discovered in Antartica. Aroused from its stasis through the application of Dr. Katsuragi's Super Selenoid Theory, Adam was subsequently reduced to an embryonic state - a process that resulted in the catastrophe known as Second Impact. The recovered Adam embryo is currently fused into Gendo Ikari's hand. According to the Book of Genesis, Adam was the first human created by God in His own image.
Angel: Unlike the biblical depiction of "angels" which possess wings, halos, and wear white robes, the Angels threatening humankind with a possible Third Impact have varied forms ranging from the microscopic to the gargantuans. In many cases, the Angel's name correspond in some measure to their appearance and attributes.

Armisael: The 16th Angel
Bakelite: This is the central term for the phenol resin used for electrical and heat insulation. A special thermosetting version of this resin was used to immobilize Eva Unit 00 when it went berserk during activation. This quick-drying compound, with the ability to stop all physical motion, makes it an ideal defensive measure for such emergencies. The "Adam" embryo Kaji carried from Germany to NERV headquarters in Japan was also encased in this special Bakelite.
Bardial: The 13th Angel
Biological&Chemical Weapon (B.C Weapon): Some of the most horrific weapons ever developed by mankind, B.C Weapons include both poison gas and germ weapons. All are within the arsenal of JSSDF.
Central Dogma: This huge, 7km space sits directly beneath NERV Headquarters and is protected by multiple bulkheads. Access to Central Dogma is prohibited for all except a handful of NERV employers. The name for this structure is borrowed from biology in which the term is used to describe the transfer of genetic information from DNA through RNA to protein.
Chamber of GAF, The: Though her meaning is not entirely clear, Ritsuko makes a statement that recycled souls were used in the creation of the Evangelion Units due to the fact that this celestial repository of spirits had been completely emptied of its contents. The opening of Heaven's Chamber of GAF is synonymous with the opening of the door to the world’s beginning and end.
Dummy Plug System, The: In the same manner by which Dr. Naoko Akagi's thought patterns were transplanted into the MAGI supercomputer, Personality Transplant OS was used to reproduce Rei's thought patterns in pilotless entry plugs named "Dummy Plugs." These Dummy Plugs allow the Evas to operate under the control of NERV personnel, instead of their devoted pilots. Eva Units 05 through 13 utilize thought patterns of Kaworu in the same manner.
Entry Plug: This long, thin capsule-shaped tube is where the Eva pilot is housed. Once the pilot is inside, the Entry Plug is inserted directly into the Eva's spinal chord. The plug is filled with a viscous liquid substance which smells like blood, called "L.C.L." When the L.C.L is electrically charged it serves to mentally link the pilot to the Eva and provides oxygen directly to the pilot's lungs. Much like ammoniac fluid, the L.C.L also provides the pilot with protection from mental attacks and physical shock. In an emergency, the Entry Plug can be ejected and is equipped with a parachute for such occasions.
Evangelion: Fourteen years of research and billions of dollars have been spent to create the "All-Purpose Humanoid Fighting Machine - Evangelion." Constructed in secret and controlled by Special Agency NERV, these massive biological machines were ostensibly created to defend the earth from the invading Angels. They can only be piloted by 14 year olds who've lost their mothers. Their name is derived from "Eve," wife of Adam in the Old Testement, and "Evanges," meaning "gospel."
Eva Until 00: Piloted by Rei Ayanami, Eva Unit 00 was the first success for the Gehirn Research Committee after many failures. During its initial activation with Rei as pilot, Eva Unit 00 went berserk, broke loose from it's anchors, and inexplicably attempted to smash through to the observation area window. Rei was severely injured during this incident. The Eva was frozen with Bakelite and later salvaged. Although originally orange in color, Unit 00's plating was replaced with blue and white armor after heavy damage was sustained during the 5th Angels attack.
Eva Unit 01: Unit 01 was the first Eva to be used in combat against the Angels. Piloted by Shinji Ikari, Unit 01's body was created from Lilith and is inhabited by the soul of Shinji's mother, Yui Ikari - a fact that may explain the Evas occasional unusual behavior such as activating without an Entry Plug, going berserk, and remaining active after its operational time limit had expired. The Eva is also the first to possess an S^2 engine, which it gained by eating the 14th Angel. Because of its unique construction, Eva Unit 01 became the sole substitute for Lilith as the medium for achieving Human Instrumentality once the Lance of Longinus was lost.
Eva Unitl 02: Fiery red in color, perhaps to match the temperament of its dedicted pilot, Asuka Langely, Eva Unit 02 was the first production model built on the assumption of actual combat. Though designed and manufactured in Japan, Unit 02 was assembled in Germany. It first faced combat against the 6th Angel when attacked at sea during its transport back to Japan. The soul of Asuka's mother, Sohryu Kyoko Zeppelin, resides inside Unit 02.
Eva Unit 03: Constructed at the first U.S NERV facilty, this dark blue production model Eva was infected by the 13th Angel when being transported by air to Japan. During activation test near Maysushiro, the Angel took control of Unit 03 and was destroyed by Unit 01. The pilot and Fourth Child, Toji Suzuhara, who was in the Entry Plug at the time, lost part of his leg, but survived the incident.
Eva Unit 04: Constructed at the NERV-2 base in Nevada, this production model Eva was created for the sake of developing and analyzing both the S^2 engine, believed to have been transplanted from the remains of the 4th Angel, and the Dummy Plug System. Upon activation of the engine, both Unit 04 and the NERV-2 base disappeared - apparently into a pocket universe called a "Sea of Dirac."
Eva Units 05 through 13: These 9 Evagelion mass-production Units were built outside of NERV headquarters and share a common configuration and coloring. Because they utilize the Dummy Plug System, they are under the direct control of SEELE. Their Dummy Plugs all bear the name "Kaworu," so they appear to have been created using the thought patterns of the 17th Angel. All posses S^2 engines and are armed with facsimiles of the Lance of Longinus.
Gaghiel: The 6th Angel
Gehirn: Yui Ikari, Gendo Ikari, and Naoko Akagi were among the initial members of the research arm of the Instrumentality Committee. Gehirn was disbanded in 2010 after completion of the MAGI supercomputer system, though the majority of its staff, including Kouzou Fuyutsuki, Ritsuko, and Misato, were transferred to NERV operations where they continued work on the E Project.
Geo Front: This is the name given to the city beneath Neo Tokyo-3, built within a pre-existing, 6km-wide concavity. NERV Headquarters is located at the center of this mysterious space and is surrounded by a subterranean lake and forest. During Angel attacks, many of the high-rise buildings that collectively comprise the "ceiling city" above the Geo Front are retracted into this space for protection.
Human Instrumentality Project, The: Also frequently called the "Human Complementation Project," this is SEELE, and therefore NERV's, ultimate goal. It is a plan to artificially evolve humanity by merging all the seperate and flawed entities of the world into a single, perfect being - an existense in which each individual's deficiencies are "complemented" by another's strengths. The Evas were not originally intended to be used as weapons, but were designed to achieve this goal by initiating the Third Impact.

Istrafel: The 7th Angel
Japan Strategic Self Defense Force (JSSDF): Established in 2003 during military conflicts between China and Vietnam over Spartlets, this is the sole military organization under the direct control of the Japanese government - the orginal JSSDF, having been incorporated into the UN Military. Though the JSSDF has tanks and aircraft under its command, it is better suited to anti-personnel and urban occupation warfare than the interception of Angels. JSSDF also has N^2 and B.C Weapons at its disposal.
Lance of Longinus, The: Both a powerful weapon and a tool to be used in conjunction with Lilith to complete Human Instrumentality Project, this spiral-shaped, two-pronged spear was unintentionaly launched into the moon's orbit after it was used to destroy the 15th Angel. It has the power to penetrate A.T Fields.
Leliel: The 12th Angel
Lilith: Lilith is the massive being crucified on a red cross within the depths of NERV headquarters. A mask bearing SEELE's insignia covers its face. SEELE originally planned to use Lilith and the Lance of Longinus to complete the Human Instrumentality Project and bring about the next stage in human evolution. Kaworu calls humans "Lilin" to indicate that they are the offspring of Lilith. It is believed that Lilith is the 2nd Angel. According to rabbinical scripture, "Lilith" was the first wife of Adam.
MAGI, The: The brain of Special Agency NERV, this supercomputer designed by Dr. Naoko Akagi actucally consists of three computer systems: Melchior-1, Balthasar-2, and Caspar-3. They are named after the three wise men from the East who came to witness the birth of Jesus in the New Testement. The operating systems for the three computers are not identical. Personality Transplant OS was used to transfer human thought patterns into the computers. As such, each of the three reproduces the thought patterns of one aspect of Dr. Naoko Akagi's personality. In this way, they are able to re-create human dilemmas.
Matriel: The 9th Angel
N^2 Weapons: N^2 mines, depth charges, and bombs constitute the most destructive conventional weapons within the arcenal of the UN Military and the JSSDF. Though they had been used against the 3rd and 7th Angels with a small degree of success, an N^2 bomb that detonated in close proximity to the 14th Angel was completely ineffective.
Neo Tokyo-3: A fortified city designed to intercept Angel attacks, Neo Tokyo-3 is built above the Geo Front. Many of the city's skyscrapers are retracted to positions below the ceiling city during attacks. Those structures which remain above ground house weapons, ammuniton, and power couplings to be used by the Evas during their defense of the city.
Plug Suit: Similar in structure to a wet suit, the Plug Suit increases the synchronization rates between the Evas and their respective pilots. Molded from a single piece of material, the suits fit loosely at first but automatically adjust to the wearer after a switch on the wrist is activated. The suits also provide various information by means of a small monitor on the back of the hand.
Progressive Knife: Part of the Eva's standard armament, the "Prog Knife" operates by dividing materials at the molecular level using a blade composed of particles vibrating at high frequency. It is housed in the shoulder of the Eva. Later models are fasioned like a box-cutter with a blade that can be extended, should part of it break off.

Second Impact: The global catastrophe that occured on September 13th, 2000. The Second Impact was the largest such cataclysm since a meteorite collided with the earth four billion years ago(the First or "Great" Impact). The Second Impact caused the earth to shift upon its axis. Thousands of species and half of the human population were destroyed as a result of environmental changes and civil unrest that followed. Though the general population believes Second Impact was the result of a meteorite falling upon Antartica, it was actually caused by Gendo Ikari and SEELE's attempt to reduce the 1st Angel, Adam, to an embryotic state.
SEELE: The secret international organization behind Special Agency NERV and the Evangelion Project, SEELE existed prior to Second Impact. It has systematically kept the Angel's existense and the events of the cataclysm from public knowledge. SEELE is determined to use all of NERV's resources to bring about the next step in human evolution in accordance with information they obtained from the "Secret Dead Sea Scrolls." The battles fought between the Evas and the Angels are a part of this plan. SEELE's leader and chairman of the Instrumentality Committee is Keel Lorentz.
Special Agency NERV: Though officials under the jurisdiction of the United Nations, this special agency responsible for promoting the Human Instrumentality Project, is actually controlled by SEELE. It was originally created in 2010 and has branch offices in many countries. From the agency's main headquarters located in Neo Tokyo-3 Geo Front, NERV's commander Gendo Ikari and deputy commander Kouzou Fuyutsuki direct the actions of the Evangelion Units and oversee the various other projects which together comprise the Human Instrumentality Project.
Special Order A-8ot: Issued by the government of Japan in Neo Tokyo-2, this order abolished all special legal protection previously enjoyed by NERV and transferred command of all its resources and projects to the Japanese government. When attempting to capture the 8th Angel, an order "A-17" was issued, so there is some conjecture that all "A" type orders concern emergency actions related to NERV activities.
Super Solenoid Theory: A theory advanced by Misato's father, Dr. Katsuragi, prior to the Second Impact. It explains the operation of the S^2 or Super Solenoid engines possessed by the Angels. The theory was inadvertently verified when Dr. Katsuragi's research expedition to Antartica discovered the first Angel, Adam, and initiated the Second Impact. Eva Unit 01 was "enhanced" with an S^2 engine when it devoured the remains of the 14th Angel.
Termianl Dogma: An area within the lowest level of Central Dogma, Terminal Dogma is completely flooded with the viscous, blood-like substance termed L.C.L. Confined behind an entryway called "Heaven's Door," Lilith is crucified upon a red cross. It is believed that contact with Lilith is the ultimate motive for the Angels' attacks, though only the humanoid Angel Kaworu succeeded in penetrating this far into Terminal Dogma.
Third Impact: It is believed that this massive catastrophe following the First Impact and the Second Impact would occur should an Angel make contact with Adam, the 1st Angel reduced to embryonic form currently fused to Gendo Ikari's hand. Though it was originally believed that the Evangelion Units were created to prevent this from happening, the ultimate goal of the Human Instrumentality Project is to actually initiate and control Third Impact.
Umbilical Cable: Much as an infant in its mother's womb receives nutrients through an umbilical cord, the Evas rely upon an umbilical cord to keep them supported with the massive amount of electrical power they need to operate. Should these cords be severed or damaged, the Eva's internal power supplies allow them to operate for a maximum of five minutes of combat. This time period can be extended if power is used only for minimal life support functions. Many of the buildings which are not retracted into the Geo Front during Angel attacks contain additional cables to be used by the Evas.
