I am writing this as a fascinated outsider hardly aware of Anime or of American cartoons outside the (superb) Simpsons.
A nephew of mine has worked in Japan recently and that has provoked my interest in the country and its culture and from my efforts at enlightenment its clear that Amime is a vibrant, ever present factor in Japanese life. I suppose Pokemon is now extremely old-hat but i would like to say that the Jessie/James/Meoth is a comic classic on the lines of Billy Bunter or The Broons!

Pretty good review. I can't really say the 80s-90s U.S. cartoons were better than the ones nowadays, they were only better because they were like the first cartoons on the very young mainstream (70s is like the experimentation of television, 80s-90s was when nobody had patented a certain cartoon type and it was a like the golden age and beginning of the young mainstream of entertainment so anything thrown at us was new and exciting that is not different with cartoons). I like how you brought up the Batman Animated Series. That is probably the one best cartoon show I loved as a kid because it outlined a lot of psychology (this is what got me interested in psychology) and the darkest evils of man. It was worthy of being Japanese like animation. I've also watched the entire Avatar the Last Airbender which is a recent Nickelodeon cartoon and found it superior to most mainstream anime as well only coming to a close with Naruto due to the superb fighting animations - this is where it's at for me and both delivers it very well and I would rather call Avatar an anime than a cartoon. So not all modern U.S. cartoons are crap.

Face it there are no good American animators, almost every "cartoon" made with incredible choreography and fighting animation is done by a guy with an asian like name. You think Gotham Knight is a "cartoon" movie? Check the credits and you will be surprised how 90% of the staff has asian names, only the head honcho executive producers and translators were American.

I found some of your review inconsistent when you compared anime with reality shows and live action movies. It's not like Japan doesn't have their own live action shows and movies, as you sound right now it seems like you think Japan has nothing but anime for entertainment. And a lot of American movies do take concepts from Japan and use it. In all movies in general Old Boy is a Korean movie which was based off of the Japanese manga (comic version of anime), Old Boy and this was considered one of the best movies ever created. People like to see deep and interactive stories, they like to see violence THAT IS DONE IN GOOD REASON, or so it's because of the passion that the characters express to go to the point of harming their neighbors that make the plot more endearing and heart wrenching, they like to see new things and Old Boy delivered because it was based off a seinen manga (manga for older audiences). I'm sure if Berserk got adapted into a live action movie similar to Old Boy's style and done by another country other than U.S. I'm sure it will come out well. That comes to my other point. America should stop now and stop making anime adaptations into live action. The humor, links and personalities clash too much between anime and American's style and it's just an sense sore. Just look at Dragon Ball Evolution, Fist of the North Star and Last Airbender (yes I call it an anime it's too good to be a cartoon). Terrible just terrible. I really hate this Shamyalan clown or whatever his name is targeted for ruining an animated masterpiece. I wish they would force change the name or at least remake it by a different producer in the future and disregard Shymalan's as a "bad" copy like people disregard there ever being a He-Man movie (because that was also bad and corny). Even worst is when they want to "Americanize" good Japanese movies. For example they wanted Will Smith to play a remake of Old Boy (U.S. version). I'm sure I would turn to a life of terrorism and assassination of whoever decides to direct this masterpiece (j/k but seriously don't). I have nothing against Will Smith but he will act American and no one in Old Boy acts American and it would just destroy the awesome built tension and just make me think I'm looking at another stupid American show and everything will just feel slapstick and sarcastic. Anything with American air can never be taken seriously. Ring has already suffered the damage.

Now if there's anything that American can make right and be taken seriously for is.... their novels. Stephen King, John Grisham, author of Da Vinci Code and other engaging authors out there. Whenever I go to Barnes and Nobles I see books of worthy intellectual and creative craft written by American authors. All the creativity of fiction is found in American books, nowhere else. In fact the only good American movies are adapted or directly taken from novels. If there are movies that aren't adapted from novels, there is Super Mario Bros. Yeah I said it I thought it was amazing that they came up with that retconned story which was a lot more compelling and better than the original Super Mario story. I mean come on you really think the movie would of been great if they followed the canon? It'll be like muppets and Sesame Street, people wearing dinosaur costumes to mimic Koopas and Bowser. If I wanted to see an abomination like that I would just go to a Halloween party.

American cartoons does not catch my interest. How are they going to compare with anime where the authors appear to have had prior college education of politics, science and deep literature? And where the animation is superior? And American Cartoons these days is like another Dreamworks cartoon movie where you have people acting sarcastic and talking about things that we would giggle about when they know about Paris Hilton and Justin Bieber, and make pop cultural references. Simpsons and South Park are still going strong and are also good American cartoons. Just to show you I don't think they're all crap shots here are a few notable American Cartoons.

Venture Bros., Batman: The Animated Series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Simpsons, South Park, Looney Tunes, Superjail (I know it's demented but is much bearable to watch than another sarcastic stereotypical American cartoon), X-Men (the older versions and the new ones aren't bad)

The rest can go to hell.

I agree with you on the Cartoon Network cartoons back in the old days of the 90's, even though I was just a elementary school girl then. The cartoons on Cartoon Network now are stupid, I mean some of them are funny, but majority is not that great, and now their trying to be like Nickelodeon, with actual actors acting in shows like Tower Prep, I thought it was Cartoon Network where they only played cartoons. In my oppion, Anime is much better than American shows, anime is much more diverse, and exciting, and different. As for U.S shows, I feel like they follow the same pattern. For example, school settings'. As far as movies, I think it depends, because there are some really great American movies like Japanese movies.

Oh and no offense to anyone. This is purely my own view. And I respect everyone’s view. ^-^ And I do agree that House, Law and Order, are great American shows. I love anime because it fits my persona style.

You mean uncut right? some producers say "Hey, thats for 10 year olds in japan! (here thats about TV 14 vsld) and make it for ten year olds.

they need to show a real anime uncut on tv to prove that, like Elfen Lied

I'm definitely talking about raw Japanese anime, not rewritten dubs (though some kid anime dubs are better than some American kid cartoons).
